------------Al fin de la Cuenta Larga

------------ (solsticio invernal 2012)

El baile eterno y vasto de las galaxias,
de las estrellas y los planetas,
los soles, las lunas, los cometas
marca la suma de la Cuenta Larga —
cinco milenios, un siglo, veintiséis años solares
desde que dicen los mayas empezó este mundo.
Los temerosos temen que se destruya la Tierra;
los optimistas esperan salvación de las estrellas.
Son ya ruinas los templos y los observatorios,
desaparecidos los reinos, cenizas los libros,
los antiguos escritos apenas
descifrados por extranjeros.
No son buenos los agüeros —
la Tierra está gravemente herida;
han desaparecido miles de plantas y animales;
el sagrado maíz mismo está contaminado
con el veneno de alacranes.

En vigilia y en rito esta noche
saquemos las plumas y los cristales,
encendamos el fuego,
ofrendamos del copal el humo perfumado.
Hay que celebrar la vida, tener por sagrados
la Tierra, el Sol, el Universo.
Despertemos y con el corazón abierto
empecemos la cuenta de nuevo.

--------At the End of the Long Count

-------------(Winter Solstice 2012)


The eternal and vast dance of the galaxies,
of the stars and the planets,
the suns, the moons, the comets
mark the sum of the Long Count —
five millenniums, a century, twenty-six solar years
since the Mayas say this world began.
The fearful fear the Earth will be destroyed;
the optimists expect salvation from the stars.
The temples and observatories are now ruins,
disappeared are the kingdoms, ashes the books,
the ancient writing barely
deciphered by strangers.
The auguries are not good —
the Earth is gravely wounded;
thousands of plants and animals have disappeared;
the sacred corn itself is contaminated
with the venom of scorpions.

In vigil and in ritual this night
let us take out the feathers and the crystals,
let us light the fire,
offer of the incense perfumed smoke.
We must celebrate life, hold as sacred
the Earth, the Sun, the Universe.
Let us awake and with an open heart
begin the count anew.
