full moon: Tanka for Amanda

-

 Tanka para Amanda

Debemos ser la luz
y si no podamos serla
debemos reflejarla.
El encender del sol alumbra el día,
el espejo de la luna alumbra la noche.

Tanka for Amanda

We must be the light,
and if we cannot be it,
we must reflect it.
The sun's burning lights the day,
the moon's mirror lights the night.

Aquarius

-----------Acuario

A Acuario,
---el airoso,
------fijo en su servicio,
lo vigila Urano desde lejos;
Saturno le pesa como plomo
y su luz como granate ardiente
destella en el cántaro de amatista
que carga Acuario,
----sus tobillos, sus pantorrillas
----bañados en el aire fijo
----de sus ideales luminosos.

-------------Aquarius

Aquarius,
---the graceful,
------at ease in his service,
is watched by Uranus from afar;
Saturn weighs on him like lead
& its light like a burning garnet
bounces sparks on the amethyst jar
that Aquarius carries,
----his ankles, his calves
----bathed in the fixed air
----of his luminous ideals.

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968)

 -

El sueño

      a Martin Luther King Jr.

— Tengo un sueño — dijo,

el sueño, medido a sus tiempos,

que su maestro el nazareno

hace dos mil años amplificó

de las antiguas escrituras de su culto,

el sueño ya estampado

en las tabletas de barro de Ur,

puesto en la cuenta de Tot,

el sueño que cuando se cumpla

nos hará verdaderamente grandes.

The Dream

      to Martin Luther King Jr.

"I have a dream," he said,

the dream, fitted to his times,

that his master the Nazarene

two-thousand years ago amplified

from the ancient scriptures of his cult,

the dream already pressed

into the clay tablets of Ur,

entered in the ledger of Toth,

the dream that when realized

will make us truly great.

Epiphany - 12th Day of Christmas

-

-----------------Manifestation

We were surprised by the place
to which the star brought us
so little worthy of a king's birth,
but our calculations left no doubt —
a stable redolent of hay and dung
inhabited by an ox and a donkey,
occasioned by lambs and kids.
The child like all new born
had nothing to distinguish him.
The little woman, like all good mother
sweet and tender, the man no longer young
showed tenderness and solicitude.
They were even more surprised and perplexed
by our visit than we for being there.
We left the gifts we had brought from so far:
the little gold coffer chased
with lions and suns, the ivory box filled
with incense; the ebony urn filled with myrrh,
and we left in silence.
Finally the youngest of us murmured,
----"Perhaps he brings revolution."
The other two kept in silence
the hope his saying awoke.

First poem of the year 2021

-

escuchando la novena de Beethoven
            la víspera de 2021

No me puedo imaginar como
siendo sordo podría haber oído
el cantar de los ángeles
sino por el oído agudo del corazón.
No me lo explico. Nunca escuchó
lo  que compuso pero nos la dio
para escuchar. Tal vez si no la escuchamos
no podramos hacer nuestra revolución.

Ludwig Beethoven by Joseph Karl Stieler 1820

    hearing Beethoven's ninth
             the eve of 2021

I cannot imagine how being deaf
he could have heard
the singing of the angels
but through the acute ear of the heart.
I cannot explain it. He never heard
what he composed but he gifted it us
to hear. Perhaps if we do not hear it
we cannot make our revolution.
