Pete Seeger (May 3, 1919 – January 27, 2014)

---The Singer and His Banjo

                                for Pete Seeger

How can I keep from singing?
he asked hefting his banjo,
machine he claimed
surrounded hate
and forced it to surrender.
We sang with him
that we would overcome
    (someday),
asked where
had all the flowers gone,
and as we marched imagined
all sorts of things
to do if we had a hammer.

Gone the way of flowers now,
the old comrade leaves us
to our singing, our marching
with our little hammers
to bring down citadels of injustice,
our teaspoons to weigh and make
the see-saw of power teeter
our way, overcome the demons
    and armies of cold angels,
        and keep despair at bay.

---El cantor y su banjo

                            Pete Seeger

¿Cómo dejar de cantar?
preguntó levantando su banjo
máquina que dijo
cercaba al odio
y lo forzaba a rendirse.
Cantábamos con él
que venceríamos
    (algún día)
preguntábamos a donde
se habían ido las flores
y al marchar imaginábamos
todo tipo de cosas
que hacer si tuviéramos martillo.

Ya ido como las flores
nos deja el viejo compañero
a nuestro cantar, nuestro marchar
con nuestros martillitos
para derribar las ciudadelas de injusticia,
nuestras cucharitas para pesar y hacer
balancear el sube-y-baja del poder
en nuestro favor, vencer a los demonios
    y ejércitos de ángeles fríos
        y alejar el desespero.

May Day — International Workers' Day

El fascismo es el fruto

del capitalismo desenfrenado

cuyo jugo la injusticia y la miseria.

Fascism is the fruit

of unchecked capitalism

whose juice injustice and misery.

"We can either have democracy in this country
or we can have great wealth
concentrated in the hands of a few,
but we can't have both."

                                                                        — Louis Brandeis
Supreme Court Justice (1916 to 1939)

“Podemos tener en este país o democracia
o grande riqueza concentrada en manos de pocos
pero no ambos.”

                                                  — Louis Brandeis

               El hombre que rema

Después de la comida, la galleta de la fortuna

da, no una fortuna sino su sabiduría:

“El hombre que rema el barco

no tiene tiempo para sacudirlo,”

dice. ¿Quién puede negar su verdad?

Pero si el barco necesita ser sacudido

¿no debe el hombre dejar de remar?

Llega un momento en que el barco

no puede continuar si el hombre remando

es esclavizado y atado por la necesidad.

El hombre debe dejar el remo

y parar su remar para exigir

lo merecido. Huelga le llaman,

recordatorio de que sin el remar

del hombre el barco para

o se lo lleva la corriente.

Cuida que la justicia sea el timón

del barco, que el remero cobre justo

salario, un descanso para oler las rosas

en la orilla, sino el hombre

debe dejar su remar.

            The Man Who Rows

After the meal, the fortune cookie

yields, not a fortune, but its wisdom:

“The man who rows the boat

doesn't have time to rock it,”

it says. Who can deny its truth?

Yet, if the boat needs rocking,

must not the man stop rowing?

There comes a time when the boat

cannot go on if the man rowing

is enslaved and bound with need.

The man must lay down the oar

and stop his rowing to demand

just due. A strike they call it,

a reminder that without the man’s

rowing the boat stands still

or is taken by the current.

Take care that justice is the rudder

of the boat, that the rower has a living

wage, a break to smell the roses

on the shore, else the man

must stop his rowing.

Earth Day & invitation

As I prepared for my yearly pilgrimage to New Orleans Jazz Fest to shake the wrinkles from my soul, renew my spirit, and recharge my batteries to carry on the struggle in resisting the fascists, the news came of the death of Pope Francis. Born-again pagan that I am, Pope Francis almost tempted a return to my natal Catholicism. Pope Francis honored his name-sake in his reverence of the Earth and followed the teaching of Yeshua of Nazareth.

Perhaps it is fitting that Pope Francis died the day before Earth Day. He spoke for the Earth and her defense (and the defense of all the life she bears) against the destruction and abuses of Capitalism and its toxic fruiting into the fascism now holding us in thrall. It is a day dark for the Earth our mother, a day on which we must commit ourselves to become our Beloved Community and wage our revolution of love, of compassion, of justice.

Un sacerdote desterrado se dirige a Coatilcue

Ave, Madre cabeza de serpiente,
     Madre faldas de serpiente —

Los estambres se han formado
en pájaros volantes cagando flores,
    el amate se ha machacado
    para formar pájaros desposados
    vistos sólo en sueños.
Las flores y cantos se han tejido;

Somos planetas;
conversamos con nuestros corazones;

An Exiled Priest Addresses Coatlicue

Ave, serpent-headed Mother
      serpent-skirted Mother —

The yarns have been shaped
to flying birds that shit flowers,
    the amate paper pounded
    & the paints spread
    to form mating birds
    seen only in dreams.
The flowers & song have been woven;
the red & the black inks have not been believed.

Mother collared in hearts & hands —

We are planets;
we converse with our hearts;
we are masters of a face & a heart,
but the distances are great among us.

    Once there were great trees
    & the waters spoke loudly
    to the listening hawks.
Cruelty knew the heat & color of blood.

Snake-belted,
snake-buckled Mother —

The seas are defiled
& the blackened sea birds
cry to the defiled moon.

    Serpent-handed,
    Eagle-footed Mother —

Your son has betrayed you
& the thirteen heavens
you carry on your back
have been poisoned.
The obsidian we cut our hands on
shaping tools of sacrifice
is abandoned.
Pain is no longer sacred
& it is not life we pay for
with our blood.

Easter Sunday

    -

                   Ha resucitado

Cuentan que un hombre
tan amoroso y justo
que muchos lo toman
por benévolo dios
fue muerto porque su enseñanza
tan amorosa y justa amenazaba

In a world governed by hate,
to love is revolutionary

                He Is Risen

They tell that a man
so loving & just
that many take him
for benevolent god
was killed because his teaching
so loving & just threatened
the very foundations of empire
& that against all law of life
three days later resurrected,
not unheard of in myth
but wondrous still.

His teaching still threatens empires
& many who dare follow it
are persecuted & killed,
& his resurrection is nothing
less than our revolution.

                Tauro

El toro de la tierra fija
lleva como un diamante
entre los cuernos
la estrella matutina.
    Su corazón de esmeralda
    oculta un valor firme
y al cuello lleva yugo de cobre
que lo une
                a la tierra
                a la estrella
                a lo infinito.

                 Taurus

The bull of the fixed earth
carries the morning star
like a diamond
between his horns.
    his emerald heart
    hides a firm worth
and at the neck he wears a copper yoke
that joins him
                        to the earth
                        to the star
                        to the infinite.

Good Friday

This day marks the death, about 2,025 years ago, of a young Jew, Yeshua of Nazarth, rebel rabbi of a village who took the highest values of his faith, love and justice, and made them universal, flesh and bone of his teaching. It so threatened abusive power that the greatest empire of his time, the Roman empire, executed him in the cruelest manner reserved for enemies of the state.

About 350 years later, the sect his disciples formed, compromising its values, allowed themselves to be made an instrument of the state. Since then, Yeshua has been honored more in the violating of his teachings than in following them. The revolution Yeshua envisioned is yet to be made and Liberation Theology will always be the enemy of tyrants.

                           Desviado

La luna asoma

por entre las ramas de los olivos,
sube sobre la cercana loma
donde los vergonzosos sucesos
ocurrieron hace ya un buen tiempo.
Hablando sin pelos en la lengua,
debía haberse casado, tenido familia,
practicado su honesta artesanía,
haber hecho algo de si mismo.
Un tipo guapo y listo,
prodigio, dicen algunos,
causando lenguas contar chismes exagerados.

estirado y colgando.
Y las cosas sin cambiar una pepita.

                    Gone Wrong

The moon peers
from among the olive branches,
rises over the nearby hill
where the shameful happenings
took place a good while back.
Bluntly speaking,
he should have married, had a family,
practiced his honest craft,
made something of himself.
A handsome fellow and bright,
a prodigy, some say,
a mere boy he presumed
to discuss with scholars.
But a young man still he went off
on some vision quest or lost himself,
for all we know, in the anonymity of the city.
He liked a good time and at a party once
managed to find wine where there was none
setting some tongues to tell tall tales about it.
He would gather folk on some small hill
and talk to them — rabble rouse, if you will.
Once, he messed with the bankers
and sellers of pigeons and small sheep
in the holy-house. For what?
The exchange booths and animal stalls
were back up the next day.
It just upset the authorities,
and look how he ended up —
                        stretched out and hanging.
And things not changed a pip.

Holy Thursday

    -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_washing

    Ritual para Jueves Santo

Llegan como mariposas
de largas distancias,
otros países, otros continentes,
pies cansados, gastados,
heridos, polvorientos
de cruzar ríos y montes,
selvas y desiertos
huyendo hambre y asesinos.
Y nosotros que vivimos
en el imperio que los desplazó
podemos hacer no menos
que lo que hizo el Maestro:
tiernamente lavarles los pies
y decirles, "Les tenemos lugar
puesto en la mesa".

    Ritual for Holy Thursday

They come like butterflies
from long distances,
other countries, other continents,
feet tired, worn, wounded, dusty
from crossing rivers & mountains,
jungles & deserts
fleeing hunger & murderers.
& we who live in the empire
that displaced them
can do no less
than what the Master did:
to tenderly wash their feet
& say, "We have a place
set for you at the table."
