Boriken, Boriken isle of enchantment, Eden of the Taino
until people of another world found you
& rich fancied your port.
Since then victim of empire have you been.
Through cruelty & disease your people were destroyed
replaced by Spanish & later mixed
with folk of Africa brought against their will
to grow sugarcane its sweetness made bitter
by slavery & later to fall
under another empire of English stock.
Extinct the Taino, extinct their language
we cannot eat of the sacred maize
nor navigate by canoe, nor rest in hammock,
nor taste the guava nor the barbeque,
nor make ceremony with tobacco,
& not fear & suffer The Center of the Wind,
The Heart of Heaven, God of the Storm, Hurricane,
anger of the Mother Goddess abused & wounded,
without saying their tongue. Oh Boriken Puerto Rico
isle of sad enchantment, victim of empire,
with love & rage let us raise our voice in your defense!

Libra — Autumnal Equinox

  -

Libra & Autumn Equinox

The balance teeters between life and death.
When you pray to the Sun and the Earth,
know that you are her answer
when you act as healer
and work for the Earth, justice, peace.

                            Libra

        amor, belleza, verdad —
sueños, siempre sueños, justos sueños.

---------------- Libra

The balance of day and night
is lit by the early sapphire of dawn
and the late opal of dusk.
It rises on obelisk of nephrite, of jade
to the cardinal point of the air,
the lever of the wind,
    and on each copper plate
    are measured art and consequences
        (love weighs on the back
        of indecision,
        on the loins of desire.)
The fulcrum of autumn
holds over chaos
tremulous and irresolute
    feeling, thought —
        love, beauty, truth —
dreams, always dreams, just dreams.

full moon: The full moon lights the sky

La luna llena ilumina el cielo

La luna llena ilumina el cielo,
las trompetas de los ángeles suenan
su melodía perfumada,
y las tardías azucenas bella donnas
bailan su coreografía quieta;
hay deleite en la noche.
La luna dice, soy fría
pero amable y espero que mi luz
traiga consuelo a las ruinas
de Gaza Palestina.

The full moon lights the sky

The full moon lights the sky,
the angels’ trumpets blow
their perfumed melody,
and the late naked-ladies
dance their still choreography;
there is delight in the night.
The moon says, I am cold
but kind and hope my light
brings comfort to the ruins
of Gaza Palestine.

I have always intended sharing poems, thoughts that carry joy and beauty, but such are the times that I am obligated to raise what voice I have to recognize and protest the abuses of the Earth, cruel injustice, the lack of peace. Forgive that I disquiet but we cannot blind ourselves to immense slaughter (genocide) and suffering of our brothers, sisters, children in Gaza Palestine.

The moon is beautiful and big tonight and we must delight in her but painful thought it be, please see this film “The Night Won’t End.”

Independence Day of Mexico

 Breve historia de un grito

Trescientos años después
de la conquista se alzó el grito
de dolores, grito de un pueblo
adolorido por independencia
del imperio. Veinte y unos años
después de ser independiente
México perdió mas de la mitad
de sus tierras al más joven
impero del norte.
Y expulsando otra invasión
y sufridas otras tiranías
se hizo por revolución el grito
dolorido. De eso hace cien
y más años. ¿Qué puede decir
una historia del hambre, la sed,
el dolor, la pena, el sufrir
de la que se hace?
La injusticia echa raíces muy largas.
Deshacerse de un yugo no es ser
libre, deshacerse de un yugo no es
lo mismo que lograr la justicia.
La lucha sigue. Pues ¡adelante!
pueblos indígenas,
mexican@s, chican@s;
¡adelante! las Américas latinas;
¡adelante! mundo.
La lucha sigue hasta la justicia.
¡Hasta la justicia sigue la lucha!

            Brief History of a Cry

Three hundred years after
the conquest, the cry of Dolores
was raised, the cry of a hurt people
for independence from the empire.
Twenty & some years
after being independent
Mexico lost more than half
of its land to the younger
empire of the north.
And expelling another invasion
and suffering other tyrannies
the painful cry was made
for revolution. That was a hundred
and more years ago. What can a history
say of the hunger, the thirst,
the pain, the grief, the suffering
of which it is made?
Injustice sends very long roots.
Throwing off a yoke is not to be
free; throwing off a yoke is not
the same as attaining justice.
The struggle goes on. So, onward
indigenous peoples, Mexicans, Chican@s;
onward, Latin America, onward world!
The struggle goes on until justice.
Until justice, the struggle goes on!

Labor Day

        The Man Who Rows

After the meal, the fortune cookie
yields, not a fortune, but its wisdom:
“The man who rows the boat
doesn't have time to rock it,”
it says. Who can deny its truth?
Yet, if the boat needs rocking,
must not the man stop rowing?
There comes a time when the boat
cannot go on if the man rowing
is enslaved and bound with need.
The man must lay down the oar
and stop his rowing to demand
just due. A strike they call it,
a reminder that without the man’s
rowing the boat stands still
or is taken by the current.
Take care that justice is the rudder
of the boat, that the rower has a living
wage, a break to smell the roses
on the shore, else the man
must stop his rowing.

Heart politics & the Democratic Convention

Last week, I returned from a Heart Politics gathering of activists (predominantly women, many in positions in government) from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, the U.K., as well as from Canada and the U.S. and elsewhere just in time to tune in to the National Democratic Convention. At the Heart Politics gathering, we had cut to the quick and delved in such topics as the Patriarchy, emotion as a way of knowing, how to put heart into public policy, and hope, among many other things.

I came home with more hope than I taken there. And hearing truths spoken at the convention and seeing a woman of color and of power take the lead with a decent, gentle man as partner to confront the vile fascist Republican party, in a setting that exuded joy, I felt my hope glimmer.

But I was not too dazzled to realize the huge systemic toxicity that rules the world. Climate change that threatens the world and life was not mentioned. Those who would speak to the unspeakable suffering, killing, starvation, genocide in Gaza were not allowed to speak. Harris threaded a narrow needle and politics overshadowed morality.

Outside the convention hall, the protestors for Palestine, Gaza were not silent. The mainstream media is wont to reduce the suffering to numbers, ever climbing numbers, with the inevitable caveat “according to Hamas,” its Zionist bias hardly disguised. For images, description of the dead, the maimed and starving children, the bereft mothers and fathers, the gaunt and despairing, the ruins, we have to go to the alternative media, the independent journalists who are being killed for reporting the genocide. The Palestinian children, women, men in Gaza are not numbers; they have faces and names, and we, the United States, are complicit in their slaughter. It is with our wealth and the weapons it is squandered on that Israel wages genocide. The blood of Palestine is on our hands as well.

Yes, we must elect Harris and Walz (the alternative would be abominable) but it is not enough; we must not cease to demand that the U.S. stop supplying Israel with the weapons with which it is waging slaughter, genocide.

y su cuento se narrara;
recuerda su nombre: Refaat Alaree.
Y la niña que lloraba,
"Tengo tanto miedo, por favor vengan.
Vengan y llévenme. Por favor ¿vendrán?"
y fue balaceada;

         The Book of Ignominy

The olive trees weep for the poet
who asked that when he died
a white kite be flown and his tale told;
remember his name: Refaat Alaree.
And the child who cried,
"I'm so scared, please come.
Come take me. Please, will you come?"
and was gunned down;
Remember her name: Hind Rajab.
Many, many more the olive trees mourn
had names too many to remember.
The land called holy is made tainted
with the blood of the innocent slaughtered
by the worst sons of the Maccabees
and the latest chapter of the Holy Book
will be called the Book of Ignominy.
