Veterans Day
A hundred some years ago
on the 11th hour
of the 11th day
of the 11th month
a cease fire was called
on the war to end all wars.
A holiday of remembrance
of peace it should have been.
But thirty and some years later,
after another murderous war,
it became a day to honor
those who fought in any war
past, present, and to come.
War has not ceased;
we go on killing one another
and poppies red & gold
still bloom in field & hill;
bees & butterflies still visit them
but they, too, are in danger.

Día del veterano
Hace cien y pico de años
en la hora 11
del día 11
del mes 11
se declaró un alto el fuego
en la guerra para acabar con toda guerra.
Una fiesta de recuerdo
de paz debería haber sido.
Pero treinta y algunos años más tarde,
después de otra guerrera asesina
se convirtió en día para honrar
los que lucharon en cualquier guerra,
pasada, presente y por venir.
No ha cesado la guerra;
seguimos matándonos unos a otros
y las amapolas rojas y doradas
todavía florecen en campo y loma;
abejas y mariposas todavía las visitan
pero ellas también están en peligro.
