full moon: If the Moon

 

                        Si la luna


Si la luna llena sobre las lomas
generosa con su luz 
fuera hecha de queso 
daría de comer a los hambrientos,
los niños muriendo de hambre,
pero la luna es solamente espejo
y sería por demás esperar
que su tierna luz calentara
los corazones de hielo 
de los ricos que rigen el mundo.

                    If the Moon


If the full moon over the hills
generous with its light 
were made of cheese 
it would feed the hungry,
the starving children,
but the moon is only a mirror
and it would be too much to hope
that its tender light could warm
the hearts of ice 
of the rich who rule the world.

Today, the 36th day of the U.S. government shutdown, Trump and his minions adamantly refuse to feed the hungry and assure health care to the sick, but the full moon rises with light of more hope in our struggle against fascism. In New York City, Zohar Mamdani, a just and compassionate man, has been elected mayor, and in California, the people passed Proposition 50 to counteract the Republican gerrymandering in Texas and other red states by temporarily allowing gerrymandering to favor Democrats. In in other states, too, democracy has been defended. The moon seems brighter and the people wake. 

Hoy, en el día 36 del cierre del gobierno estadounidense, Trump y sus secuaces se niegan rotundamente a alimentar a los hambrientos y garantizar atención médica a los enfermos, pero la luna llena sale con luz de más esperanza en nuestra lucha contra el fascismo. En la ciudad de Nueva York, Zohar Mamdani, un hombre justo y compasivo, ha sido elegido alcalde, y en California, el pueblo aprobó la Proposición 50 para contrarrestar la manipulación electoral republicana en Texas y otros estados conservadores, permitiendo temporalmente que dicha manipulación favorezca a los demócratas. En otros estados, también, se ha defendido la democracia. La luna aparece más brillante y el pueblo despierta.
