As we honor Martin Luther King Jr., let us be wary of putting him on a pedestal and not commit ourselves to the path he set for us. Indeed, we must be wary of putting on a futile pedestal the Master, Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth, whose teaching he followed in the Theology of Liberation and quest of justice rooted in compassion.
We live dire times in which not only democracy but the very concept of truth is in peril. We must confront and resist the corrupt, lying, murderous fascists that threaten us. The very Earth responds violently to the damages wrought upon her by war and predatory economics (capitalism) and their technology that threaten life itself.

Love is an active verb and sterile sentimentality does not serve us well. What is demanded of us is a fierce love and a fierce healing that require courageous, unrelenting action. Only thus can we truly honor Martin Luther King Jr. and the many teachers of justice and compassion that came before him and opened the path he followed and that we must take to make our Beloved Community.
On the 50th anniversary of his murder, I wrote:
Threnody, Hymn, or Rallying Song?
For Martin Luther King Jr.
on the 50th anniversary of his murder
I have mined the great one's words
for his brightest gems of wisdom
to mark the fifty years since his murder.
Was it their brilliance that blinded me with tears?
Or was it that memory of half a century ago
that truly made of April a cruel month?
When such a voice for justice is silenced
the whole world suffers a great wound
& truth itself must wear the veils of mourning.
Doubly painful this day is that fools & liars
sit upon the chairs of power & govern us
in a democracy grown rotten,
bitten as it was from its beginnings
by the worm of slavery & conquest,
justice but a word frayed, chewed
by dogs of greed, hypocrites & knaves.
Should we mark this day with a threnody,
or with a hymn, or with a rallying song
to bring us to the streets clamoring
for the justice & peace of which he spoke
to come rolling down like water
in a mighty stream? Such is our choice,
but as for me, I am here to sing the rallying song.

A la vez que honramos a Martin Luther King Jr., tengamos cuidado de no ponerlo en un pedestal y no comprometernos al camino que nos ha trazado. De hecho, debemos tener cuidado de no poner en un pedestal inútil al Maestro, Yeshua (Jesús) de Nazaret, cuya enseñanza siguió en la Teología de la liberación y la búsqueda de la justicia arraigada en la compasión.
Vivimos tiempos terribles en los que no sólo la democracia sino el mero concepto de la verdad está en peligro. Debemos enfrontar y resistir l@s fascistas corruptos, mendaces y asesinos que nos amenazan La Tierra misma responde violentamente a los daños que le causan la guerra y una economía rapaz (el capitalismo) y su tecnología que amenazan la vida misma.
El amor es un verbo activo y el sentimentalismo estéril no nos sirve de nada. Lo que se exige de nosotros es un amor feroz y un sanar feroz que requiren acción valiente y firme. Solo así podemos honrar verdaderamente a Martin Luther King Jr. y a los muchos maestros de la justicia y compasión que vinieron antes y abrieron el camino que él siguió y que debemos tomar para formar nuestra Comunidad Amada.
En el 50 aniversario de su asesinato escribí:
¿Lamento, himno, o canto a la acción?
para Martin Luther King Jr.
en el 50 aniversario de su asesinato.
He minado las palabras del grande
por la más brillantes joyas de su saber
para marcar los cincuenta años de su asesinato.
¿Sería su brillantez que me cegó con lágrimas?
¿O sería la memoria hace medio siglo
que verdaderamente hizo de abril un mes amargo?
Cuando se silencia tal voz por la justicia
y la verdad misma debe vestir velos de luto.
Lo doble penoso este día es que imbéciles
ocupan las sillas del poder y nos gobiernan
mordida como la fue desde sus principios
por el gusano de la esclavitud y la conquista,
la justicia solamente una palabra deshilada, mascada
por los perros de la codicia, hipócritas y canallas.
¿Debemos marcar este día con un lamento
o con un himno, o con un canto a la acción
para sacarnos a las calles clamando
por la justicia y la paz de las cuales habló
