Tenochtitlan at 700
Since we came to the lake and on an islet we saw an eagle devouring a serpent perched on a nopal and we founded the great city thirteen bundles of years, a flag and three points ago. Of the thirteen bundles of years when all fires should have been put out and lit anew on the breast of a man only three could be celebrated before we were conquered by men come from overseas. They demolished our temples and with their stones built their own. Our gods became mute and the mother of their’s came to comfort us. We mixed with the invaders and their slaves. The city extended and the lake vanished. Of that lunar foundation, it has been fifteen flags and a feather since, the Sun and the Moon continue on their ways, the Earth to roll, though now fevered, and the world becomes more and more strange. The greater reason to love, celebrate, and protect our joy.
