full moon of the Serpent Year 4711

 Kitagawa Utamaro, 1754–1806

Tanka for the Full Moon of the Snake Year

Sign of good fortune,
a rainbow snake bites its tail
and rings the full moon.
May it lick our ears in sleep
that we might dream of singing.

Tanka para la luna llena del año de la serpiente

Signo de la buena fortuna,
una serpiente arco iris se muerde la cola
y rodea la luna llena.
Que nos lama los oídos en el dormir
para que soñemos en cantar.

Piscis

-

-------------
-----------------Piscis

El par de peces nada
entre cristales de amatistas,
entre peñas de heliotropo —
----la luz de Júpiter les llega
----como un reflejo en estaño;
Neptuno perezosamente los vigila.
Si vadeas en las aguas inconstantes,
los verás a tus pies
nadar como imágenes de sueños,
-------pacíficos,
------------------benévolos.

----------------Pisces

The pair of fish swim
among amethyst crystals,
among boulders of bloodstone —
---the light of Jupiter comes to them
---like reflections on tin;
---Neptune lazily watches.
If you wade in the inconstant water,
you will see them at your feet
swimming like the images of dreams,
-----peaceful,
----------------kind.

Year of the Serpent 4711

--
-

Kono Bairei 幸野 楳嶺, 1844-1895

Tanka for the Year of the Serpent

The serpent, the snake,
sheds its skin, scales bright-shining
hugs close to the earth.
From earth its wisdom, its strength,
healer, teacher, counselor.

La serpiente, la culebra
arroja la piel, escamas brillando
se aferra a la tierra.
De la tierra su saber, su fuerza,
curandera, maestra, consejera.

Want to be sure of his spelling. Proof fever. Martin Cunningham forgot to give us his spellingbee conundrum this morning. It is amusing to view the unpar one ar alleled embarra two ars is it? double ess ment of a harassed pedlar while gauging au the symmetry with a y of a pelled pear under a cemetery wall. Silly, isn't it? Cemetery put in of course on account of the symmetry.
