full moon: Bookends Moons

-

------------------Bookends Moons

-----------------------------to two bright lights that leave us;

-------------------------------Gene Sharp & Ursula LeGuin

The first day of the year, the month
was graced by a full moon;
a full moon graces the last day of the month,
bookends holding the first ledgers of the year,
sad accounts: eleven school shootings, just short
of three a week & who knows how many others
(too common for much reporting, or is it fake news?)
But, hey, those in power hold that everyone no matter
how young & confused, how insane with bigotry
& hate, has the right to a gun. It's our right they say,
though we have no right to medicine, to food,
to shelter, to schooling, to rest for the old;
though 700,000 of our youth are to be expelled
from the country because no papers attest
their right to be, remain in the only country they know.
Arrogant ignorance, greed, cruelty, knavery
rule the land — the second full moon closing the month
is blue for many more reasons than one.

---------------------Lunas soportalibros

-------------------------------------a dos luces brillantes que nos dejan:

-------------------------------------------Gene Sharp y Ursula LeGuin

El primer día del año, del mes
fue adornado por una luna llena;
a un techo, a la enseñanza, al descanso para los viejos;

Aquarius

-

-----------Acuario

A Acuario,
---el airoso,
------fijo en su servicio,
lo vigila Urano desde lejos;
Saturno le pesa como plomo
y su luz como granate ardiente
destella en el cántaro de amatista
que carga Acuario,
----sus tobillos, sus pantorrillas
----bañados en el aire fijo
----de sus ideales luminosos.

-------------Aquarius

Aquarius,
---the graceful,
------at ease in his service,
is watched by Uranus from afar;
Saturn weighs on him like lead
& its light like a burning garnet
bounces sparks on the amethyst jar
that Aquarius carries,
----his ankles, his calves
----bathed in the fixed air
----of his luminous ideals.

John Oliver Simon (1942-2018)

-

---Cuando muere un poeta

---------a John Oliver Simon

Cuando muere un poeta
se vacía una estrella
en los cielos de la imaginación,
se seca una raíz principal
en la profundidad de la lengua,
se empobrece la palabra,
queda desolado el oído,
desorientado el corazón.

 ----------When a Poet Dies

----------------to John Oliver Simon

When a poet dies
a star is emptied
in the heavens of the imagination,
a main root dries
in the depths of the tongue,
the word is impoverished,
the ear is left desolate,
disoriented the heart.

Martin Luther King Jr. (1/15/29 - 4/4/68)

-
-

----------After the Lecture

---------------------------for Martin Luther King Jr.

A woman said I was not polite
to the opposition,
that I was harsh
and did not encourage
discourse.

Perhaps if I were Christ,
I could say, “Forgive them
----for they know not what they do.”
Or the queen, and apologize
for stubbing my executioner’s toes.

But only if I knew
the executioners
----were mine only.

What courtesy have I the right to give
to them who break the bones,
----the souls of my brothers,
------------------my sisters;
deny bread, books
----to the hungry,
----the children;
--------medicine, healing
--------to the sick;
roofs to the homeless;

who spoil the oceans,
----lay waste the forests
--------and the deserts,
violate the land?

Affability on the lips
of outrage
is a sin and blasphemy
----I’ll not be guilty of.

--------Después del Discurso

------------------------a Martin Luther King Jr.

----y las almas de mis hermanos,
--------------------mis hermanas;
les niegan el pan, los libros
----a los hambrientos,
----a los niños;
--------la medicina, el sanar
--------a los enfermos;
techos a los desamparados;

que estropean los mares,
----que destruyen los bosques
--------y los desiertos,
violan la tierra?

Afabilidad en los labios
de la furia justa
es pecado y blasfemia
----de la cual no seré culpable.

Epiphany -12th Day

-

---Pensamientos durante una Jornada

------------------------1

------------------------2

Una vez que supe que iba,
supe lo que traería;

--------Thoughts on a Journey

---------------------1

I knew I had to take gold.
When it was brought from my treasury,
even I marveled at it.
It had come from a royal suppliant,
a small coffer chased in lions & suns.
Even he did not fully know how costly it is:
the metal shines with the sweat of slaves,
its beauty weighed by blood.
(I had dreamt that in another world
it is called the excrement of gods.)
It had to be the incorruptible measure of cost.

--------------------2

Once I knew I was going,
I knew what I would bring;
the casket of olibanum stood on the table,
white male frankincense, breast-shaped drops,
brought by a traveler from Hadramaut.
As I gazed at the sky
the three tears I had placed in the brazier
gave up their scent.
It smelled bitterly sweet, this clotted blood of trees,
This smoke holy to the rites of Isis,
this costly gum precious to Horus.

--------------------3

For every coming there is a going,
even for stars.
One is no more astounding than the other,
one is to be celebrated even as the other,
& I sent for the myrrh,
brown & bitter & costly,
brought long distances by a friend.
(He said that somewhere it is fed cows
to make their milk flow rich,)
incense for the gods,
unguent for the dead.

[From the records of a Galilean merchant late in the reign of Herod the Great: “The census has been good for trade, praise the Lord God. Prices are high and no one asks where the money comes from. Today a clownish craftsman bought one of my good mules: a gold box; two thick wool blankets: a pound of frankincense; and wheat-bread, dried figs, three goat-skins of wine (for a long trip, he said): one pound of myrrh.”]

full moon on the new year

-

Para desearles un año lleno
de bendiciones y alegría en nuestra resistencia
a las fuerzas oscuras que nos amenazan.

To wish you a year full
of blessings & joy in our resistance
to the dark forces that threaten us.

---------Luna llena del año nuevo

--
---------------------1

-------------------2

No mono tonto

------Full Moon of the New Year

-----------------------1

The full moon pregnant with light
ushers in the new year
and invokes the elephant-headed lord
to dance away as he may
the obstacles with which the year begins.
The madness of hate, cruelty, and greed,
arrogant ignorance and fear
have in hand the reins of empire,
hold the world in thrall,
and put the Earth at risk.
Let our resistance and resilience be
the feet of the dancing lord
that with the power of our love
and of our joy outraged
we may clear the way to healing
and with our firm resolve
make the best of the new year.

----------------------2

No foolish monkey
trying to grab the moon
in the depths of a well
nor drunk poet drowning
to embrace her in a river,
less foolish and more sober,
I catch her in a bowl of water
and hold her for as long as she permits.
I float a few flowers to close the year
that began and ended badly
and wonder how the new year,
which promises little better,
will unfold.

May the lord of beginnings
join us in our dance of resistance
and clear the way for a more just,
more peaceful world, and a healing Earth.
