que guarda el fuego fijo del valor.
    Anhela devorar al sol
    y mudarlo en oro
que surgiera por sus venas
como río caliente de luz.

Se dice que Leo, regido por el sol, gobierna el corazón, centro de la vitalidad, la fuerza vital, el amor y la valentía. También la columna vertebral, la fuerza. Estas son precisamente las cualidades que debemos cultivar en estos tiempos en que las fuerzas de la muerte están en el poder.

El amor debe ser nuestro fundamento y debemos tener la valentía de nombrar las cosas por lo que son. La verdad misma se daña y el lenguaje se usa deshonestamente para normalizar el mal que debemos resistir y derrotar. Los grandes medios de comunicación (propiedad de las mismas corporaciones que están en la raíz de ese mal) insisten en llamar al Partido Republicano "conservador", aunque durante muchos años ya no ha sido conservador, sino fascista. Los únicos conservadores son los demócratas del establecimiento, los llamados moderados, obligados al capitalismo de las corporaciones que nos ha llevado a esta situación y apoyan a Israel en su genocidio de los palestinos. Los republicanos son fascistas simplemente porque si piensas como fascista, hablas como un fascista, actúas como un fascista, entonces eres  fascista y debes ser llamad@ así.

Ayer comenzó y continúa hoy Tishá BeAv, el día más triste del calendario judío en el que se recita el Libro de las Lamentaciones. Entre lamentos por templos destruidos hace milenios debe haber lamento por el genocidio perpetrado por Israel contra el pueblo palestino hoy en día.

Y tenemos que tener la fuerza para resistir y poner fin a la vil crueldad, a la maldad. Recordemos la observación de Hannah Arendt: el mal puede volverse banal, llevado a cabo por gente común que “simplemente hace su trabajo", cuya complicidad normaliza el mal y lo hace posible: los miembros del ICE, la policía, el ejército, la burocracia que firman y promueven los documentos de extradición o ejecución; gente común que, aunque elles mismes no odien, ejecutan los dictados del odio y la crueldad.

Nuestro valor, coraje y nuestra voluntad deben ser lo suficientemente fuertes como para reconocer y negarnos a ser parte de esa banalidad malvada, cueste lo que cueste. Si queremos lograr nuestra revolución, nuestros corazones deben ser encendidos por un amor feroz.

It is said that Leo, ruled by the sun, governs the heart, center of vitality, the life force, love and courage. And also the spine, strength. These are the very qualities that we must cultivate at this time when the forces of death are in power. 

Love must be our foundation and we must have the courage to name things for what they are. Truth itself is undermined and language is used dishonestly normalizing the evil that we must resist and overcome. The mainstream media (owned by the very corporations at the root of that evil) insist on calling the Republican party “conservative” though for quite a great number of years now it has not been conservative but fascist. The conservatives are the Establishment Democrats, so called moderates, beholden to the capitalism of the corporations that brought us to this and who support Israel in its genocide of Palestinians. The Republicans are fascist simply because if you believe like a fascist, talk like a fascist, act like a fascist, then you are a fascist and must be called such. 

Begun yesterday and through today is Tisha b'Av, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar on which the Book of Lamentations is recited. Among lamentations for temples destroyed millenniums ago, there must be lament for the genocide inflicted by Israel on the people of Palestine today.  

And we must have the strength to resist and put an end to vile cruelty, evil. Let us recall Hannah Arendt’s observation that evil can become banal, carried out by common folk who are “merely doing their job,” whose complicity normalizes evil and makes it possible: the members of ICE, or of the police, or the army, or the bureaucracy who sign and push the papers for extradition or execution, common folk who may not themselves hate but nevertheless execute the dictates of hatred, of cruelty. 

Our courage and will must be strong enough to recognize and refuse to be part of that evil banality — at whatever cost. If we are to accomplish our revolution, our hearts must be fired with such fierce love.

Very Brief History of 250 years 

Two hundred fifty years ago, colonists of the English empire in America declared themselves free from the authority of the king and holding as self-evident truth that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” established a divided, self-contradictory, embryo of a democracy that did not include women, nor the slaves they had brought from Africa, nor men not of European origins, nor those of limited wealth. And certainly not the indigenous Americans whom they called “merciless Indian Savages” and upon whom they inflicted genocide.

In those two hundred fifty years, gradually, painfully, a flawed democracy evolved that included stealing half the territory of neighboring Mexico and a bloody civil war that ended slavery 85 years after the declaration. Women did not get to vote until 1920 (the year my twelve-year old mother immigrated with her family to the U.S.) African Americans did not gain full civil rights until 1964 and their voting rights assured the year after. As the years went by, rights were extended, the injustices of conquest and unbridled capitalism corrected, or at least, ameliorated. And the United States of America tried to further evolve as a democracy.

Much happened in the 60s, a painful decade of conflict but also of joy and hope, the decade of a cultural revolution called the Counterculture (or popularly, the Hippie Revolution.) And it freaked out the monied powerful rich and the “moral majority,” heirs of the Puritanical heritage against which much of the youth, the “Hippies” rebelled.

The backlash came quickly; the Republican Ronald Reagan, claiming to make America great again, was elected president in 1980 backed by the ultrawealthy and the Christian Right (the so-called “Silent Majority,” “Moral Majority”) and immediately set to undermine the democratic gains painfully achieved since that Declaration of 1776.

Just over thirty years later, a billionaire criminal, ignorant and authoritarian, also claiming to Make America Great Again, heading the Republican Party already fascist was elected President of the United States. At the end of his first term, he tried to rig the election and when he lost it, claimed that the election had been stolen, and rallied his base base to storm and wreck the Capitol of the nation (fully televised) on Three Kings Day 2021. 

Four years later, against everything that is decent, Trump was again elected president of the United States and immediately acted like a king above the law issuing edicts and tearing up the Constitution, cruelly persecuting immigrants, destroying families and communities, and starting a war on a whim that wrecked the world economy, all under a plan devised by the fascist Federalist Society and enabled by a complicit Republican-controlled Congress and Supreme Court of his appointees that would make the president (the executive) into a dictator.

And so, two hundred fifty years after the birthing of the United States of America by a declaration against the authority of a king, we find ourselves under the most corrupt, most lawless, most criminal, and most tyrannical government we have ever had putting at peril the nation, the world, the very life the Earth bears. 

Now we, the people, must declare, be, and make, another revolution deeply rooted in love, in justice, and in joy of life taking to heart that we all have “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Muy breve historia de 250 años

 

Hace doscientos cincuenta años, los colonos del imperio inglés en América se declararon libres de la autoridad del rey y, sosteniendo como verdad evidente que «todos los hombres son creados iguales, que están dotados por su Creador de ciertos derechos inalienables, entre ellos la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad», establecieron el embrión de una democracia dividida y contradictoria que no incluía a las mujeres, ni a los esclavos traídos de África, ni a los hombres que no fueran de origen europeo, ni a aquellos de escasos recursos. Y, ciertamente, tampoco a los indígenas americanos, a quienes llamaban «salvajes indios despiadados» y contra quienes intentaron un genocidio.

A lo largo de esos doscientos cincuenta años, y de manera gradual y dolorosa, evolucionó una democracia imperfecta que incluyó robándole a México vecino al mitad de su territorio y una sangrienta guerra civil que puso fin a la esclavitud 85 años después de la declaración. Las mujeres no obtuvieron el derecho al voto hasta 1920 (año en que mi madre, entonces de doce años, emigró con su familia a los Estados Unidos); los afroamericanos no consiguieron enteramente sus derechos civiles hasta 1964, y sus derechos electorales garantizados al año siguiente. Con el paso del tiempo, se ampliaron los derechos y se corrigieron —o al menos se atenuaron— las injusticias de la conquista y del capitalismo desenfrenado. Así, los Estados Unidos de América intentaron seguir evolucionando como democracia.

Mucho sucedió en la década de 1960, una etapa dolorosa marcada por conflictos pero también por la alegría y la esperanza; fue la década de una revolución cultural conocida como la Contracultura (o, popularmente, la revolución *hippie*). Esto alarmó profundamente a las élites adineradas y a la llamada «mayoría moral», herederos de esa tradición puritana contra la cual se rebeló gran parte de la juventud: los *hippies*.

La reacción vino pronto; el republicano Ronald Reagan, bajo el lema de «hacer a Estados Unidos grande de nuevo», fue elegido presidente en 1980 con el respaldo de los ultrarricos y la derecha cristiana (la llamada «Mayoría Silenciosa» o «Mayoría Moral») e inmediatamente se puso a deshacer los logros democráticos alcanzados con tanto esfuerzo desde aquella Declaración de 1776.

Poco más de treinta años después, un multimillonario criminal, ignorante y autoritario —que también prometía «hacer a Estados Unidos grande de nuevo» y encabezaba el Partido Republicano ya fascista— fue elegido presidente de los Estados Unidos. Al finalizar su primer mandato, intentó manipular las elecciones y, perdiéndolas, declaró fraude y movilizó a sus bases bajas para asaltar y destrozar el Capitolio de la nación (televisado) el Día de Reyes de 2021.

Cuatro años más tarde, contra toda decencia, Trump fue elegido nuevamente presidente de los Estados Unidos y inmediatamente actuó como un rey por encima de la ley: declaró decretos, violo la Constitución, persiguió cruelmente a los inmigrantes, destruyó familias y comunidades, y desató una guerra por puro capricho que arruinó la economía mundial; todo ello bajo un plan ideado por la fascista Federalist Society y facilitado por un Congreso cómplice controlado por los republicanos y una Corte Suprema hecha de jueces nombrados por él, lo que convertiría al presidente (al poder ejecutivo) en un dictador.

Así, doscientos cincuenta años después del nacimiento de los Estados Unidos de América —nacidos de una declaración contra la autoridad de un rey—, nos encontramos bajo el gobierno más corrupto, ilegal, criminal y tiránico que jamás hayamos tenido, que pone en peligro a la nación, al mundo y a la propia vida que da la Tierra.

Ahora nosotros, el pueblo, tenemos que proclamar, ser y hacer otra revolución profundamente arraigada en el amor, la justicia y la alegría de vivir, teniendo a corazón que todos tenemos « ciertos derechos inalienables, entre ellos la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad».
