Leo

                    León

El león, ojos de carnalina,
colmillos, garras de sardónice,
lleva en el pecho corazón de rubí
que guarda el fuego fijo del valor.
    Anhela devorar al sol
    y mudarlo en oro
que surgiera por sus venas
como río caliente de luz.

Leo

 The lion, carnelian eyes,
fangs, claws of sardonyx,
carries in his breast a ruby heart
that holds the steadfast fires of courage.
It desires to devour the sun
    and turn it into gold
that would run in his veins
like a hot river of light.

Passing on the Laurels

-

        Pasando los laureles

A quien poeta la ciudad
escoja que me siga,
te paso la corona de laurel
y te bendigo que tu musa
sea generosa, tus palabras sean
dulces con compasión
y amor a la justicia aún
cuando tengan que dar voz
al amargo dolor y la rabia,
digan la verdad cuando el poder
mienta, y alaben a la Tierra,
y la vida, alaben la justicia
y la paz, alaben la alegría.
Que tus palabras te llenen
el corazón y los corazones
de l@s que las oigan.
Bendice.

Passing on the Laurels

To whomever poet the city
chooses to succeed me,
I pass on the laurel chaplet
and bless that your muse
be generous, your words be
sweet with compassion
and love of justice even
when they must give voice
to bitter grief and rage,
speak truth when power
lies, and praise the Earth,
and life, praise justice
and peace, praise joy.
May your words fill
your heart and the hearts
of them who hear them.
Bless.

                © Rafael Jesús González 2023

The time is come to pass on the laurels
and if you are a poet living in Berkeley, California
and would like to wear them, please apply for the honor.

Oh, Say Can You See?

The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate
the growth of private power to a point where it becomes
stronger than their democratic State itself. That, in essence
is Fascism — ownership of government by an individual,
by a group, or by any controlling private power.

                                                President Franklin D. Roosevelt

        A Declaration Revisited

We hold these truths
to be self-evident, they said,
that all men (provided they be
of European descent, not women,
& of a certain wealth
are created equal,
that they are endowed
by their Creator
with certain unalienable rights
(such as to enslave others,
take their lands,
& to trash the Earth),
that among these are
life (for the so privileged),
Liberty (for those who can afford it)
& the pursuit (if they are able
of Happiness (measured
by how much they consume.

To this pronouncement they pledged
their lives (?), their fortunes (that part
not stowed away in foreign banks
& sheltered by tax breaks).
& their "Sacred Honor"(?)

                                                    Presidente Franklin D. Roosevelt

                    Declaración repasada

Tenemos estas verdades
de por si evidentes, dijeron,
que todos hombres (con tal que sean
de ascendencia Europea, no mujeres,
y de ciertos bienes
son creados iguales,
que son dotados
por su Creador
con ciertos derechos inalienables
(tales como los de esclavizar a otros,
quitarles sus terrenos,
y de destrozar la Tierra),
que entre ellos son
la vida (para los tales privilegiados),
la libertad (para cuales la puedan
y la búsqueda (si pueden
de la felicidad (medida
por cuanto sonsuman.)

A esta declaración comprometieron
sus vidas (?), sus fortunas (esa parte
no metida en bancos extranjeros
y protegida de impuestos),
y su "honor Sagrado." (?)

full moon: Reflection of the Moon

Reflejo de la luna

El reflejo de la luna

se quiebra en las aguas

que jala. El mundo

también está roto

y el mundo roto

daña a la Tierra.

Hay sequía y tormenta,

inundación e incendio;

los ríos se desbordan

o se secan.

Que la luz del sol

suavizada por la luna

abra el corazón

para que remendemos

al mundo.

© Rafael Jesús González 2023

Reflection of the Moon

The reflection of the moon

breaks on the waters

she pulls. The world,

too, is broken

& the broken world

harms the Earth.

There is drought & storm,

flood & wildfire;

rivers overflow

or run dry.

Let the sun’s light

softened by the moon

open the heart

so that we may mend

the world.

Cancer & Summer Solstice

  -

-
Father Sun rises to his zenith as plagues biological and social run through the world and Mother Earth is in a high fever. We wake and see that millennia of the patriarchy has created a system that is not viable, that it disturbs the health of the Mother and threatens life. There is a systemic sickness in our world. Our prayer for the Summer Solstice is for our healing.

But also there is hope in the resistance that rises from what is best in us the people: compassion, respect for justice, for democracy, a reverence for truth, for the Earth, for life. Herein lie our hopes for healing. The light of love must prevail.

El cangrejo anhela,
al fin del largo día,
arrancar del cielo
esa moneda de plata fría
que es la luna.
Sus ojos son cuentas de rubí
    y en las entrañas
    guarda una perla sensitiva
que anhela llevar muy hondo,

muy hondo
al punto cardinal del agua,
    al fondo primordial del mar.

The crab longs,
at the end of the long day,
to tear from the sky
that coin of cold silver
that is the moon.
    Its eyes are ruby beads
    & in its entrails
    it keeps a sensitive pearl
which it longs to carry very deep,

very deep
to the cardinal point of the waters,
the primordial depths of the sea.

Juneteenth, a nacional holiday

   -

Juneteen marks the date of June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Declaration, that more than 250,000 slaves in Texas were told that they were free with "absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves . . ." — a Texas holiday that became national in 2021 and its promise of "absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property" has not been fulfilled.

Today, Juneteen takes on greater significance in light of the "Black Lives Matter" movement, an awakening. And for us Mexicans, Chican@s, Raza, Latin@s there is much in the movement that speaks to us, for in the lexicon of racism "brown" is but a shade of "black." For us in or from Texas, murder of our people by the Texas Rangers many of whom belonged to the Ku Klux Klan (as I suspect do many of them today) is part of our history. The Texas Rangers' and other law-enforcement's complicity in the persecution and torture of immigrants on the Texas border today is but a continuation of history. The "rinche" (roughly equivalent to "pig" in the jargon of the 60s) is part of our Mexican Texas history.

Nationally Latin@s make up 17% of of the population but suffer 23% of all searches and almost 30% of arrests. In 2016, 16% of the 585 killings by police were Latin@s; 25% were Black. Since POTUS 45, the figures increased certainly. In California, between 2016 and 2018, where Latinos constitute 39% of the population, 46% of fatal shootings by police were Latino victims, second only to the murder of our Black brothers and sisters. Our pain, our oppression are shared.

If there is one thing that we must learn from the CoronaVirus plague it is that we are all in this together, and together we must wage our revolution — black, brown, red, white, yellow, all colors of the rainbow. We are all, brothers and sisters all, besieged by three plagues simultaneously, world-wide: that of the CoronaVirus and that of climate change, and that of fascism .

Ours must truly be a revolution, radical, going to the roots: the millennia-old patriarchy must come to an end; the Era of the Warrior must give way to the Age of the Healer; the economics of empire (capitalism) inseparable from violation of the Earth, slavery, racism, war cannot go on. The Earth of whom we are but a part cannot sustain the old order. The paradigm must change. It is up to us to do it.

Juneteenth was a day of jubilation for a promise not realized; let today be a day of revolution, of change, of fierce love and fierce healing, of reclaiming the promise.

Flag Day

 -

               The Flag

At our best
we show our true colors,
fly the flag that stands
for our deepest, broadest
allegiance to each other,
to the Earth holy & diverse.

These are my colors:

red of my love that colors all
& is the root & flower & fruit,
the heart of my belief
& what I know of truth.

orange
of my abandon, my surrender
to my living, mindless of laws
that would fetter the steps
of my wildest dances.

yellow of my joy that tastes
of the sun, exultation in the
wealth of the senses,
root of my power & my love.

green
of my hopes that wing
my desires & lend will
to my acts, that inform
even my opposition
to outrage.

blue
of my memories
that make my history of wings
that soar to the mountains
& drop to the ravines,
complex topography of myself.

purple
of my sorrows, my remorse,
my shame for betrayals of the heart,
most often of omission,
through weariness or fear.

This is my flag;
 its colors run,
diffuse at the edges,
 blend, shade
into hues, half-tones
 difficult to name.

The tongues that praise it
are so many, so varied, & so sweet
their chorus rivals the birds’
& silences the angels in their flight.

Known everywhere
as sign of peace & joy,
let this be our flag;
 its colors dance.

The Flag of Peace

When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as the warriors [peace-makers] of the Rainbow.

Old Native American Prophecy

It has been several centuries that Samuel Johnson said that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels. It is true today as much as ever and the scoundrels are fond of waving flags of various stripes and colors to hide or flaunt their villainy.
All flags are beautiful, but association often makes them ugly. However, there is one flag, universal enough that even nature flies, which inspires me and I do not hesitate to raise. It is the rainbow flag of peace .

For good reason have the colors of the prism been sign of peace and joy. It was the rainbow that appeared to Noah as a sign of peace, and in almost all cultures I have studied or heard of, the rainbow is an auspicious sign of hope, promise, joy.

Justly so, the peace movement throughout Europe, Latin America, and throughout the world, has flown the rainbow flag as the flag of peace.

-
It is also the flag of the Rainbow Family (or Tribe) flown at Rainbow Gatherings that since 1969 convene yearly in the name of sister/brotherhood to celebrate life and the Earth in peace and joy. (According to an Old Native American Prophecy, When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as peace warriors [peace-makers] of the Rainbow.)

It is as well the flag of diversity, tolerance, dignity, respect, celebration first flown in 1979 by those who refuse to have human gender and sexuality narrowly sanctioned and defined, its variants persecuted.

In a somewhat healthier democracy in 1984, it was the Rainbow Coalition that attempted to represent and empower all the diverse elements of the nation.

These colors contain all the colors our human perceptions can discern. Offered the full pallet of the spectrum from which to pick my colors, I refuse to choose; I’ll have them all, thank you.

All are my colors and this my flag of choice. It now hangs, with my prisms, in my window as sign of my allegiance to the Earth, to my fellow creatures, to justice, to peace.

I pass it on to you. Under these colors let us heal the nation and make peace with the world, create it anew in reverence for the Earth, in justice and sister/brotherhood.

                            La bandera

En nuestro óptimo
mostramos nuestros verdaderos colores,
volamos la bandera que señala
nuestra más profunda, más amplia
devoción uno al otro,
a la Tierra bendita y diversa.

Son estos mis colores:

rojo de mi amor que ilumina todo
y es la raíz y la flor y el fruto,
el corazón de mi creer
y de lo que sé de la verdad.

anaranjado de mi abandono, entrega
a mi vivir , despreocupado de leyes
que encadenaran los pasos
de mis más extravagantes bailes.

amarillo de mis regocijo que sabe
a sol, exaltación
en la riqueza de los sentidos,
raíz de mi poder y mi amar.

verde de mi esperanza que da alas
a mis deseos y presta voluntad
a mis actos, que informa
aun mi oposición
al ultraje.

azul de mis memorias
que forman mi historia de alas
que suben a las montañas
y caen a las barrancas,
compleja topografía de mi ser.

purpúreo de mi tristeza, remordimiento,
mi pena por las traiciones del corazón,
más bien de omisión,
por motivos de cansancio o temor.

Es esta mi bandera;

Reconocida dondequiera
como signo de paz y regocijo,
sea este nuestro pabellón;
