Five year ago on the occasion of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, I wrote “Luna del barco fantasma/Ghost Ship Moon” in memory of the 36 young artists who perished in it. Now I sit on the Advisory Committee of Vital Arts, a nonprofit organization founded by Prof. Edwin Bernbaum and Mrs. Diane Bernbaum in memory of their son Jonathan and the 35 other victims of the conflagration. Vital Arts is dedicated to ensuring affordable living/studio/performance spaces for the arts community of the San Francisco Bay Area. If our artists are forced to leave our cities due to a predatory economics, we will lose the cultural vitality and graciousness for which San Francisco Bay is renowned.
A mural near the shell of the Ghost Ship building commemorates the fire and honors those who died in it. Many of the bereaved families, and many others, would like a monument installed on the Ghost Ship site. A park would be beautiful.
But an even more beautiful and living memorial would be an artists’ cooperative arts center with living, studio, performance spaces, gallery spaces. The young artists died for art and what better way to honor their spirit than to provide for other artists to carry on the dead’s lives’ work on the site where they gave their lives? Ghost Ship must not end in its ashes but instead, like the phoenix, rise in a renewed form, Spirit Ship to carry the spirits and the spirit of the artists who perished there onward into a new age of beauty, love, caring, justice; our revolution. (A shared vision is a planted seed.)

Hace cino años en ocasión del incendio Ghost Ship en Oakland escribí “Luna del barco fantasma/Ghost Ship Moon” en memoria de l@s 36 jóvenes artistas que murieron en él. Ahora formo parte del Comité Asesor de Vital Arts (Artes Vitales), organización sin fines de lucro fundada por el Prof. Edwin Bernbaum y Sra. Diane Bernbaum en memoria de su hijo Jonathan y las otras 35 víctimas de la conflagración. Vital Arts se dedica a garantizar espacios asequibles para vivienda, talleres, y presentaciones para la comunidad artística del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco. Si nuestros artistas se ven obligados a abandonar nuestras ciudades por causa de una economía rapaz perderemos la vitalidad cultural y la gracia por la cual la Bahía de San Francisco es reconocida.
Un mural cerca de los restos del edificio Ghost Ship (Barco fantasma) conmemora el incendio y honra a l@s que murieron en él. Muchas de las familias en duelo, y mucha otra gente, quisieran un monumento en el sitio de Ghost Ship. Un parque sería hermoso.
Pero un monumento aun más hermoso y vivo sería un centro de artes cooperativo con viviendas, talleres, espacios de actuación, espacios de galería. Los jóvenes artistas murieron por el arte y ¿qué mejor manera de honrar su espíritu que proporcionar a otros artistas para que continúen con el trabajo de sus vidas de los muertos en el lugar donde dieron sus vidas?. Ghost Ship no debe acabar en sus cenizas sino que como el fénix, debe resurgir en una forma renovada, Spirit Ship (Barco del Espíritu) para llevar los espíritus y el espíritu de los artistas que perecieron allí hacia una nueva era de belleza, amor, bondad, justica; nuestra revolución. (Una visión compartida es una semilla plantada.)

barco fantasma de fantasías,
de ensueños, de visiones
de l@s jóvenes artistas

donde vivir y crear
mas en el barco fantasma
velas de llamas.
¿Qué intentó purificar
el Señor Shiva
con este sacrificio de inocentes?
¿La infernal economía de imperio,
la codicia que sólo les permitió
esta morada en el barco fantasma?
¿Que expiación se requiere?

The immense wailing moon
looks for her children in the rubble
of the burned ghost ship,
ghost ship of fancies,
of daydreams, of visions
of the young artists
who had nowhere
to live & create
but in the ghost ship
sails of flames.
What did Lord Shiva
intend to purify
with this sacrifice of innocents?
The hellish economics of empire,
the greed that allowed them
only this lodging in the ghost ship?
What expiation is required?
The moon looks for her children
of the burned ghost ship
only this lodging in the ghost ship?
