    Nahuipohualli ihuan chicyei: 88


Cuatro banderas ocho puntos,
cuentas de piedra verde
significan mucho — pero en verdad
no todas han sido de piedra verde; 
algunas han sido de oro útiles
para formarse el rostro; muchas
han sido de pedernal y obsidiana
que han ensangrentado las manos,
el corazón y muchas otras de barro, 
humildes días pasados en labor. 
Pero bien, contemos los años 
en cuentas de piedra verde 
y en el círculo plantemos la bandera
de la sabiduría que los años deben traer,
la bandera del amar que es lo más preciso
que se debe saber, la bandera del valor 
y la fuerzo de la madurez, la bandera 
del sanar, legado de los ancianos. 
Y al pie de cada bandera, 
dos cuentas de piedra verde.
Al centro, el árbol de la vida —
        Gracias, alabanza, bendición.

Four flags eight dots,
beads of greenstone
mean much — but in truth
not all have been of greenstone; 
some have been of gold useful
in forming a face; many
have been of flint and obsidian
which have bloodied the hands,
the heart, and many others of clay, 
humble days of work. 
But well, let us count the years 
in beads of greenstone 
and plant in the circle the flag
of wisdom that the years should bring,
the flag of loving the most essential
that must be known, the flag of courage 
and strength of maturity, the flag 
of healing, legacy of the old. 
And at the foot of each flag, 
two beads of greenstone.
At the center, the tree of life —
        Thanks, praise, blessing.
