Every morning I dread the news — another state takes away a woman’s right over her own body; curtails the Black & Brown vote; bans books in libraries & schools; prohibits Ethnic Studies and the study of history; takes away medical care for the poor; takes away GLBT rights; more immigrants killed; more mass shootings; homelessness multiplies, another war ignites in another part of the world; fascism threatens democracy world-wide; climate-change-caused fires, tornadoes, floods, droughts grow more and more terrible. Lies, hate, ugliness proliferate. The world is fractured, violence spirals, the unspeakable suffering tears at the heart. The joy in which our power is rooted is diminished, hope is strained. Darkness overcomes the soul. (Palo Alto: a History of California, Capitalism, and the World by Malcolm Harris reveals how systemic the evil is.)
But, the greatest teachers tell us, darkness can only be dispelled by light, lies by truth, ugliness by beauty, and hate by love. What is it in our power to do? We try to lead our complicated lives as best we can and try to ignore what besets the world. Or with such knowing burdening our spirits we allow ourselves to become disempowered. We forget that we have no choice but to be artists, conscious or unconscious artists. We choreograph the spaces through which we move, graciously or ungraciously. A smile and hello to the crestfallen person we pass on the street is healing, a light in the darkness. Every kind, gracious, cheerful, compassionate act is healing. We tend to forget that little acts can lead to big. We tend to forget that we are the revolution of heart and consciousness that we must make. Love can only be taught by loving.
We may have a pin called the Earth-Justice-Peace pin (some call it the healers button, others the awake button, some the love button) which, more likely than not, we received with a blessing. Everyone finds it beautiful, happy, and no one misinterprets its meaning.

But even if not, we can share the Earth-Justice-Peace image on the internet like we do ‘imoges,’ visual signs that take the place of speech. Signs do that, but symbols even more richly and profoundly.
We may just drag the Earth-Justice-Peace image onto our computer desktop, play with it, share it in our e-mails, social media, blogs, websites, fliers, posters, wherever our imaginations open doors. Often I share images incorporating the E-J-P image with you. If you like, you are more than welcome to use them. They belong to no one and to everybody (they are protected by a Creative Commons license); they are ours.

Tiene una historia (inglés), sus elementos determinados por consenso por les organizadores del Primer Día Internacional del Desarme Nuclear el solsticio veraniego de 1983. Eso fue hace algunos años pero su significado nunca ha sido más pertinente. Sus símbolos y valores son inconfundibles — nuestros valores. Es nuestra imagen de quien amamos la vida. Ahora más que nunca es el momento de que llevemos nuestros colores, nuestros valores, nuestros corazones en la manga, la imagen Tierra-Justicia-Paz, la insignia de la Comunidad Amada (español) postulada por Martin Luther King Jr. y Thich Nhat Hanh, nosotros que veneramos la Tierra y nos comprometemos a la justicia y la paz.
Podemos mandar a hacer la bandera, encargar los pins, las etiquetas para obsequiar; sólo necesitamos identificarlos como “la imagen Tierra-Justicia-Paz.” (Una amiguita celebró su quinceañera obsequiándole a cada une de sus invitades el pin Tierra-Justicia-Paz como obsequio de fiesta.) Pero aunque no, podemos compartir la imagen Tierra-Justicia-Paz en el Internet como lo hacemos con ‘emojis’, signos visuales que reemplazan el habla. Los signos hacen eso, pero los símbolos lo hacen de manera aún más rica y profunda.
Podemos simplemente arrastrar la imagen Tierra-Justicia-Paz al escritorio de la computadora, jugar con ella, compartirla en nuestros correos electrónicos, redes sociales, blogs, sitos web, folletos, carteles, dondequiera que nuestra imaginación abra puertas. A menudo comparto imágenes que incorporan la imagen T-J-P. Si quieres eres más que bienvenide a utilizarlos. Todas las mañanas temo las noticias: otro estado le quita a la mujer el derecho sobre su propio cuerpo; restringe el voto de negros y morenos; prohíbe libros en bibliotecas y escuelas; prohíbe los estudios étnicos y el estudio de la historia; quita atención médica a los pobres, quita derechos a personas GLBT; más inmigrantes son asesinados; más masacres; la falta de vivienda multiplica; estalla otra guerra en otra parte del mundo; los incendios, tornados, inundaciones y sequías debidos al cambio climático se vuelven cada vez más terribles. Proliferan las mentiras, el odio, la fealdad. El mundo está fracturado, la violencia aumenta en espiral, el sufrimiento indescriptible desgarra el corazón. La alegría en la que se arraiga nuestro poder disminuye, la esperanza se agota. La oscuridad vence al espíritu. Pero, nos dicen les más grandes maestres, la oscuridad sólo se disipa con la luz, la mentira con la verdad, la fealdad con la belleza, y el odio con el amar. ¿Qué está en nuestras manos hacer? Tratamos de llevar nuestras vidas complicadas lo mejor que podamos y tratamos de ignorar lo que acosa al mundo. O con tal conocimiento cargando nuestros espíritus nos permitimos perder nuestro poder. Olvidamos que no podemos evitar ser artistas, artistas conscientes o inconscientes. Damos forma a los espacios en que nos movemos, con gracia o sin gracia. Una sonrisa y un saludo a la persona cabizbaja con que nos cruzamos por la calle son sanadores, una luz en la oscuridad. Todo acto amable, gentil, alegre y compasivo es sanador. Tendemos a olvidar que los pequeños actos pueden conducir a grandes actos. Tendemos a olvidar que somos la revolución del corazón y de la consciencia que debemos hacer. El amar sólo se puede enseñar amando. Amar debe ser nuestro arte.
