Someone said that he who works 
with his hands is a laborer, 
he who works with his hands 
& his head is a craftsman, 
he who works with his hands 
& his head and his heart is an artist. 
Since to be human is to make art
what they must have meant to say
by “artist” is he/she
who pushes the limits of beauty,
broadens the scope of truth,
hones perception,
opens the heart.
Without such art
we starve the spirit.
Woe to us if we do not nurture
such artists and such art
that enrich consciousness
and challenge the banal.

I share this recent article on the success and crisis of the Aurora Theatre Company on whose Advisory Council I sit. I am also on the Advisory Council of Vital Arts whose mission is to ensure affordable living-studio-performance space for the arts community of the San Francisco Bay Area. One of the concerns of my activism has been the arts (I have been on the Advisory Council of Dancing Earth since its founding, the Advisory Council of the Oakland Museum of California 1995-2015, the Board of Directors of Pro Arts in the 80s) and today, the arts, the arts community in the San Francisco Bay Area is embattled, threatened by gentrification (the obscene concentration of wealth), meager government support, and the changes due to the pandemic, especially the theaters in our communities. If the artists are forced to leave and the theaters close in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco (some of the most costly and most culturally influential cities in the U.S.), it would be a tragedy worthy of the stage.

Alguien dijo que el que trabaja 
con sus manos es obrero, 
el que trabaja con sus manos 
y su cabeza es artesano, 
el que trabaja con sus manos 
y su cabeza y su corazón es artista.
Ya que ser humano es hacer arte
lo que ha de haber querido decir 
por “artista” son aquel(la)
que traspasa los límites de la belleza,
amplía el alcance de la verdad,
afila la percepción,
abre el corazón.
Sin tal arte
matamos de hambre el espíritu.
¡Ay! de nosotros si no nutrimos
tales artistas y tal arte 
que enriquecen la consciencia
y desafían lo banal.

Comparto este reciente artículo sobre el éxito y la crisis de Aurora Theatre Company en cuyo Consejo Asesor formo parte. También formo parte del Consejo Asesor de Vital Arts cuya misión es garantizar espacios razonables de vivienda, taller y presentaciones para la comunidad artística del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco. Una de las inquietudes de mi activismo ha sido las artes (he estado en el Consejo Asesor de Dancing Earth desde su fundación, el Consejo Asesor del Oakland Museum of California 1995-2015, la Mesa Directiva de Pro Arts en los años 80) y hoy las artes, la comunidad artística en el Área de la Bahía de San Francisco está agobiada, amenazada por la gentrificación (la concentración obscena de la riqueza), el escaso apoyo gubernamental y los cambios debidos a la pandemia, especialmente los teatros de nuestras comunidades. Si l@s artistas se ven obligados a irse y los teatros cierran en Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco (unas de las ciudades más costosas y culturalmente más influyentes de los EE.UU.) sería una tragedia digna de un escenario.
