Carnaval

Se cuenta que Yeshua fue al desierto durante cuarenta días en busca de visiones para ayunar y meditar y allí el espíritu del mal lo tentó a convertir piedras en pan para aliviar su hambre y romper su ayuno, a saltar desde un pináculo para poner a prueba su fe y a inclinarse ante el mal a cambio de riquezas y dominio sobre los reinos del mundo. Tales fueron las visiones del mal de Yeshua en su hambre y reflexiones. Dijo que no y sus visiones del bien, las contó en sus enseñanzas de amor, justicia y paz por las cuales fue ejecutado por el imperio romano porque socavan la noción misma del imperio.

Aproximadamente 325 años después de su muerte, sus fieles instituyeron la costumbre de la Cuaresma, cuarenta días de ayuno y penitencia antes de la celebración de la supuesta resurrección de Yeshua. Y luego, en la Edad Media, antes de que comenzara la Cuaresma, se celebraban festivales de juerga tales como las antiguos fiestas de las Dionisias, las Saturnales y las Bacanales.Máscaras daban anonimato y licencia para romper reglas y vivir fantasías por un momento. Incorporando elementos de la Fiesta de los Locos, se usaban disfraces que borraban las distinciones de clase y género y permitían burlarse de las instituciones y personajes que gobiernan nuestras vidas. Se llamaba carnaval y culminaba el martes ante que empezara la mortificación del cuerpo.

        Cuentas de carnaval

De las calles de Nueva Orleáns 
2    en pleno carnaval,
me llamaste;
tu voz un hilo 
de cuentas lustrosas
    verdes,
               doradas, 
                            púrpuras
me engalanó de encanto
y me hizo bailar el corazón.

Sobre la Bahía de San Francisco
el cielo amanece color de cenizas,
pero mañana en vez del rosario,
diré esas cuentas de carnaval.

Carnival

It is told that Yeshua went into the desert for forty days on a vision quest to fast and meditate and there the spirit of evil tempted him to turn stones into bread to ease his hunger and break his fast, to jump from a pinnacle to put his faith to the proof, and to bow to evil in return for riches and dominion over the kingdoms of the world. Such were Yeshua’s visions of evil in his hunger and musings. He said no and his visions of good, he told in his teachings of love, justice, and peace for which he was executed by the Roman empire because they undermine the very notion of empire itself.

About 325 years after his death, his followers instituted the custom of Lent, forty days of fasting and penance before the celebration of Yeshua’s purported resurrection. And then in the middle ages, a festival of revelry like the ancient like the Dionysia, the Saturnalia, the Bacchanalia were celebrated before Lent was to begin. Masks gave anonymity and license to break rules and live fantasies for a moment. Incorporating elements of the Feast of Fools, costumes were worn that blurred distinctions of class and gender and permitted mockery of institutions and personages that govern our lives. It was called carnival and culminated with the Tuesday before the mortification of the body was to begin.

                Carnival Beads

From the streets of New Orleans
    in full Mardi Gras,
you called;
your words, a string
of lustrous beads,
    green,
              gold,
                      purple
adorned me with joy
and made my heart dance.

Over San Francisco Bay
the sky dawns the color of ashes,
but tomorrow instead of the rosary,
I will say those carnival beads.
