Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday, sleepy-eyed and probably hungover from revelry, the folk went to church to have their forehead smeared with ash to remind them of our mortality and thus begin the forty days of Lent.

            Ash Wednesday

From the color-blind church
thrusting a finger to a sky
with a hangover,
the worshippers come
bearing celestial status-symbols
on their foreheads.
Clouds spill water tongues
on streets leading to nowhere.
A car chokes —
a sparrow falls —
few really believe in death
